  • Sustainability by the Numb3rs – Part 2
    Starts: 5:30 PM
    Ends: April 24, 2014 - 7:30 PM
Location: Fuse at The Riverside @ 1724 Broadway Street, Boulder, CO 80302, USA
    Description: <p><a href='http://boulderfuse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Chalkboard-for-Sustainability-by-the-numbers.jpg'><img class='alignnone size-medium wp-image-1840' alt='Chalkboard for Sustainability by the numbers' src='http://boulderfuse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Chalkboard-for-Sustainability-by-the-numbers-300x166.jpg&#039; width='300' height='166' /></a></p>
<p>The goal of the course is to help participants develop an intuitive and quantitative understanding of the scale of a variety of climate, energy, and general sustainability issues.  We will work through many simple (and maybe a few not-so-simple) order of magnitude calculations.  Through them, we will explore the scale of our civilization’s unsustainability, and a variety of potential solutions — both plausible and implausible.</p>
<p>This is the <strong>second</strong> in a series of classes hosted by <a href='http://cleanenergyaction.org/'>Clean Energy Action</a> and <a title='The Boulder Free School' href='http://boulderfreeschool.wordpress.com/&#039; target='_blank'>Boulder Free School</a>.  Find out more <a title='Sustainability by the Numb3rs | Clean Energy Action' href='http://cleanenergyaction.org/programs/sustainability-by-the-numb3rs/'>on the main course index page</a>.</p>
    <p><strong>Class Outline:</strong></p>
<p>In this class we will revisit the relationship between <em>energy</em> — which is a quantity of work (measured in Joules, or perhaps more familiarly on your electricity bill, in kilowatt hours) — and <em>power</em>, which is a rate of energy usage or flow (measured in Watts).  We’ll look at the <em>power density</em> of various renewable energy sources — especially solar — and see when and where that becomes an important constraint.  We’ll try and get a sense of the scale of our global energy system, where the energy comes from today, what it goes to, and where we might be able to get it from in a zero carbon future.  We will also highlight the difference between <em>electricity</em> and <em>energy</em>, which are often and mistakenly conflated.</p>
    <h5>Homework:</h5>
<p>You must <a title='Sustainability by the Numb3rs 2014 | Google Groups' href='https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/sustainability-by-the-numb3rs-2014'>join the Google Group for this course</a>! And check out the rest of the homework on the course page.</p>

  • Negotiations and Influence for Entrepreneurs - Impact Hub Boulder - 04/29/2014 - 4:15 pm - 7:15 pm
    Starts: 10:15 PM
    Ends: April 30, 2014 - 1:15 AM
    Location: Impact Hub Boulder
Description: As entrepreneurs, we are negotiating and influencing all the time—with co-founders, team members, contractors, investors, board members, vendors, joint venture partners, key customers, etc.  Good negotiation and influence skills are a key to leading a successful startup.

In this 2.5 hour fast-moving program, you will learn a practical model for negotiation and influence. This approach is not about just getting the best deal or getting agreement.  The vast majority of negotiations are best resolved by finding creative solutions and generating new possibilities.  This is not easy to do in the midst of tension, conflict, and differences.

Used effectively, this negotiation and influence approach will help you navigate tough situations, create solid agreements, and also build trust.  And, it is not only effective in a business environment, it will also improve your ability to resolve family conflicts, handle community matters, lead meetings, etc.

In this program, you’ll learn practical tools to break out of ineffective patterns, be more persuasive, and lead negotiations that build relationships and produce results.

    Tough conversations with team members
Strategy decisions with your direct reports and co-founders
    Managing investors and board members
    Pricing with a key customer
Dealing with angry or upset customers
    Partner negotiations
Negotiations with vendors, suppliers, and or other groups
